Activities here provide hands-on, one-to-one learning. They also provide insight into what the public does or does not understand. As a result, this enables us to try some different teaching techniques. An average of about 150 people each week from mid-June to September (total of 1,500) people learn through participation. Some just observe but others help with cleaning, counting and measuring the shellfish. Much of the data we use in our educational efforts is taken from RCTB growing activities at our 10 upwellers. We keep records of all upweller activities, including growth, nutrition, temperature and water quality. These records help us better understand the environment at the different locations around the bay. The records show how different the various locations really are. This is a great starting point for people to begin to understand the complexity of our natural systems.
Upweller Locations
An upweller is a shellfish nursery. The public is invited to visit these locations, talk to our volunteers and learn how we care for thousands of baby shellfish. See the video below and reference the interactive map for specific locations and times to visit.
